First Touch Isn’t the Problem — What Young Defenders Actually Need First
How to Deal with Long Balls as a Defender | The Mindset You Need Before First Touch [U10 Case Study]
Coach: Yutaro Noma (Soccer Private Lessons / Soccer Home Coaching)
Basic Information
• 4th Grade (Elementary School)
• Position: Defender
• Private lesson under limited training time due to entrance exam preparation
Main Issues
• Difficulty handling long balls
• Struggles against goalkeeper hand kicks
• Unstable first touch (trapping)
The Real Problem
At first glance, this looked like a “poor first touch” issue.
However, that was not the real problem.
The key issue was:
No image of what to do after controlling the ball
• Focus is only on the first touch
• No clear next action
• No available options in mind
As a result,
the first touch became an isolated action
Coaching Decision
In this session, we intentionally chose:
NOT to teach first touch
For a defender, the priority is:
• Prevent conceding goals
• Handle the ball safely
Therefore, we focused on:
Clearing the ball first
Training Content
① Clearing drills
② Introduction to long passing (long kick)
The reason for shifting to long kicks was:
to create what comes AFTER the first touch
Technical Focus
• Improving posture
• Using structure instead of brute force
• Learning to use gravity (ground force)
Changes During the Session
At first, the player struggled.
However,
• Several high-quality kicks were achieved
• The player said, “That feels good”
• A clear success experience was created
This “feeling” became an important breakthrough.
Future Direction
• Stabilize the quality of long kicks
• Coordinate first-touch training with other coaches
• Build skills based on the next action, not isolated technique
Summary
First touch is not just about stopping the ball.
It is a tool to make the next play possible.
Without this perspective,
no matter how much you practice, it will not translate into real matches.
For Parents Facing Similar Issues
• Your child struggles with long balls
• First touch is inconsistent
• Mistakes happen frequently in matches
In many cases, the issue is not technique itself,
but the way the player understands the game.
We help players improve by organizing both their thinking and their actions.
